I recently replaced the Koverall fabric covering for my tympan with paper, shrunken into place. The paper seems much better, tough, very taut and flat, like a drum head. In addition, tape holds to the paper better than it does to the fabric.
I used the Permalin paper recommended by Rummonds. You can get reasonably small quantities from Steve Pratt at Pratt Wagon Works; Cove Fort; Beaver, Utah 84713. Phone/Fax: (435) 438-1024.

Also, some people use brown craft (Kraft?) paper, but I haven't tried it.
ReplyDeleteSteve Pratt died recently, sigh.
ReplyDeleteHe was an interesting man. Among other things, he build a number of replica hand presses, founding and machining the cast iron from scratch!

So what are the qualities of this paper--can you guess at a good substitute? I've seen the kraft paper being dampened and taped and then it shrinks.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what makes it good and can't really suggest a substitute. My impression is that it's heavier than kraft paper. I expect when I run my supply down, I'll just use kraft paper. Next time I go to Daniel Smith, I'll take along a bit and see if I can find something comparable.
